about tom
Tom McRae is a british singer-songwriter born in 1976 in Suffolk. The son of two practising vicars, McRae left his native Suffolk to attend university in London where he studied politics and was a member of several unsuccessful bands. After graduation he elected to strike out on his own, and was signed to DB Records after playing his home demos to producer Roger Bechirian.
McRae's profile was raised when Scott Walker invited him to appear at June 2000's Meltdown Festival, and was further enhanced with the release of his self-titled debut album in October. This stark acoustic set eschewed any studio trickery or vocal dramatics, relying instead on McRae's gift for simple melodies and passionate delivery of his barbed observations of a flawed society.
McRae's second album Just Like Blood was released at the start of 2003 and drew its title from a poem by British poet Simon Armitage. Released over three years after the appearance of his debut, the album added subtle instrumental touches to "sweeten" the sound. The focal point of the album remained McRae's increasingly authoritative songwriting, however, with "Stronger Than Dirt" and "Karaoke Soul" noted stand-out tracks.
The artist signed a new recording contract with the BMG conglomerate the following year. His third album, All Maps Welcome, was recorded live over the course of only a few weeks with members of his touring band.
In 2007, he issued a fourth album, King of Cards, with a new music label: V2 Music.
